Description

For sample adults and sample children, INJANY reports whether, in the past 3 months, they had an accident or injury where any part of their body was hurt. Sample adults are given the additional instruction that this excludes any of the injuries they mentioned in response to questions covering repetitive strain injuries (INJREPANY).

INJANY is collected as part of the rotating core NHIS questions on sudden injury, fielded for two consecutive years every three years. The 2020 NHIS Survey Description defines sudden injury as injury that:

…may occur accidently or on purpose, and it may be self-inflicted or caused by others.

The sudden injury rotating core includes questions on sudden injury and whether the sudden injury limited usual activities for at least 24 hours following the injury. Such injuries are considered significant injuries. Follow-up questions about the number of significant injuries, the location where they occurred, the activity in which the person was engaged when they occurred, the type of injury (e.g., fall, motor vehicle accident), and medical care following injury were also asked.

In addition to INJANY, variables in the rotating NHIS injury core include:

Other NHIS Data on Injury

The NHIS has adopted several different approaches to the collection of data on injury over time. Most recently, the NHIS questionnaire included an injury and poisoning supplement, fielded annually from 1997 until 2017. For more information on person- and injury-level data from the injury and poisoning supplements, please see our user note. The NHIS Disability Supplement (NHIS-D), fielded in 1994-95, also collected a handful of measures of injury, such as DPADLINJPLACE (Place where injury or accident causing main limiting ADL condition occurred) and DPADLINJURYE (External cause of injury for main limiting ADL condition caused by accident or injury). In addition to the two supplements already mentioned, the NHIS has also fielded other supplements over the years that partially or fully cover injury topics. For example, there are a set of variables on adult conditions that were collected only for 2008 including injury variables such as HEADINJEV (Ever had injury to head or brain).
