Description

For sample adults age 18+ in 2002 who had used a relaxation technique in the past 12 months (RELBRETHYR, RELGIMYR, RELMEDYR, or RELRELAXYR) and had used a relaxation technique to treat a specific health problem or condition (RELTREAT), RELTRECPAIN indicates whether the person had used a relaxation technique to treat recurring pain.

Related Variables

Recurring pain was one of 72 possible specific conditions that sample adults (but not sample children) could report treating with a relaxation technique.

The other such conditions are:

  • excessive use of alcohol or tobacco (RELTALCTOB, 2007 only)
  • arthritis, lupus, or fibromyalgia (RELTARTHLF, 2002 only)
  • anemia and blood disorders--adults (RELTBLOOD, 2007 only)
  • bowel problems and constipation (RELTBOWL, 2002 only)
  • congestive heart failure (RELTCONGHF, 2002 only)
  • other nerve damage, including carpal tunnel syndrome (RELTCTS)
  • dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease (RELTDEMENT, 2007 only)
  • inflammatory bowel disease (RELTINFB, 2007 only)
  • irregular heartbeat (RELTIRRH, 2002 only)
  • joint pain or stiffness/other joint condition (RELTJNTPAIN)
  • macular degeneration (RELTMACD, 2002 only)
  • allergy to medication (RELTMALL, 2002 only)
  • memory loss or loss of other cognitive function (RELTMEMLOS, 2007 only)
  • missing limbs (fingers, toes or digits), amputee (RELTMLIMB)
  • circulation problems (other than in the legs) (RELTNLCIRC)
  • other allergies--adults (RELTOALLA, 2007 only)
  • other heart condition or disease (RELTOHART)
  • other infectious diseases (RELTOINF, 2007 only)
  • knee problems (not arthritis, not joint injury) (RELTOKNEE)
  • Parkinson's disease (RELTPARK, 2002 only)
  • polio (myelitis), paralysis, para/quadriplegia (RELTPOLIO)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis (RELTRHEUM, 2007 only)
  • substance abuse, other than alcohol or tobacco (RELTSUBST, 2007 only)
  • varicose veins, hemorrhoids (RELTVEIN)

Additionally, there are 31 other conditions that both sample adults and sample children could report treating with a relaxation technique. For the full list of conditions, see RELTREAT.

Relaxation techniques are one of 16 modalities of alternative medicine that were included in the 2002 and 2007 Alternative Health Supplement. Respondents could report treating recurring pain by 14 of those methods. (The omitted alternative treatments are hypnosis and movement techniques, which were included as treatments for specific health problems in the 2007 survey only. See HYPYR and MOVALEXYR for more information.) Analysts interested in the treatment of recurring pain by other alternative therapies should see RELMEDYR for the full list of alternative medicine treatments and a summary of other relaxation technique-related questions, as well as definitions.

Comparability

This variable is only available for 2002. Treatment of many other specific conditions by a relaxation technique was covered in the 2007 Alternative Health Supplement, but recurring pain were not identified as a specific condition for treatment by alternative medicine in that year.
