Description

For sample adults who had had a healing ritual or sacrament performed for their own health or treatment during the past 12 months (PRARITYR), PRATREAT indicates whether the healing ritual/sacrament was used to treat a specific health problem or condition.

This variable is part of the Alternative Health Supplements sponsored by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) and the Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS). Related Variables

Respondents who indicated that they used healing rituals/sacraments to treat a specific health problem or condition were asked follow-up questions.

 

These include:

  • combined with conventional treatment (PRAUSCOMBO)
  • health care provider recommended it (PRAUSHCREC)
  • conventional medical treatments too expensive (PRAUSMEDCOST)
  • conventional medical treatment would not help (PRAUSMEDFAIL)

Respondents who indicated that they had used healing rituals/sacraments to treat a specific condition were also asked to identify that condition. There are 74 variables for specific conditions that sample adults could indicate were treated with healing rituals/sacraments.

Sample adults only were able to indicate that they used healing rituals/sacraments to treat:

  • bowel problems and constipation (PRATBOWL)
  • other nerve damage, including carpal tunnel syndrome (PRATCTS)
  • joint pain or stiffness/other joint condition (PRATJNTPAIN)
  • missing limbs (fingers, toes or digits), amputee (PRATMLIMB)
  • circulation problems (other than in the legs) (PRATNLCIRC)
  • other heart condition or disease (PRATOHART)
  • knee problems (not arthritis, not joint injury) (PRATOKNEE)
  • polio (myelitis), paralysis, para/quadriplegia (PRATPOLIO)
  • varicose veins, hemorrhoids (PRATVEIN)
  • migraine or severe headache (PRATMIG)
  • other developmental problem (PRATODD)
  • other lung or breathing problem (PRATOLUNG)

The aforementioned variables indicating which conditions respondents treated via healing rituals/sacraments provide a "yes" or "no" response for each condition. Analysts interested in the conditions that healing rituals/sacraments was used to treat may wish to consult the following summary variables, as well:

  • first condition for which healing rituals/sacraments was used (PRACON1)
  • degree of help from healing rituals/sacraments, 1st condition (PRACON1HELP)
  • second condition for which healing rituals/sacraments was used (PRACON2)
  • degree of help from healing rituals/sacraments, 2nd condition (PRACON2HELP)
  • third condition for which healing rituals/sacraments was used (PRACON3)
  • degree of help from healing rituals/sacraments, 3rd condition (PRACON3HELP)
  • condition count for healing rituals/sacraments (PRACONNO)
