Description

For sample adults in 2002 who had ever had a healing ritual or sacrament performed for their own health or treatment (PRARITEV), PRARITYR reports whether the person had had a healing ritual or sacrament performed for their own health or treatment in the past 12 months.

Healing rituals/sacraments, along with prayer, were one of many alternative health treatment modalities included in the 2002 and 2007 Alternative Health Supplements. For the full list of alternative health treatments covered in the NHIS, and for general background information about the Alternative Health Supplements, see ACUYR.

Definitions

The 2002 Field Representative's Manual provides these definitions:

A sacrament is a formal and sacred religious act believed to be instituted or recognized by Jesus Christ.
Performed to strengthen those who are seriously ill or facing difficult surgeries or medical treatments, anointing of the sick is a sacrament in which the patient is anointed with holy oil.
The laying on of hands is a religious ceremony involving the placement of hands, by one or more persons (lay or clergy), on the body of the recipient. Usually employing prayer, the ceremony may take place in a church or less formal setting, and may be sued for minor as well as more serious ailments and illnesses.
Healing circles are spiritual gatherings that usually take place in informal settings, may involve invocations (calling upon a higher power or authority), and may use other healing approaches, such as prayer, energy healing therapy/reiki, and natural herbs.

These definitions were not routinely shared with respondents.
