Description
For sample adults and sample children, HRISKWRKEV indicates whether the individual ever had a job, or combination of jobs, where they were exposed to loud sounds or noise for 4 or more hours a day for several days a week. Loud means so loud that you must speak in a raised voice to be heard. In 2007, this question was asked to sample adults who had ever worked.

The hearing supplement questions were included to address the Healthy People 2010 program initiatives, including reducing adult hearing loss in the noise-exposed public.
In 2023, this variable was part of a Sample Adult and Sample Child Hearing supplement (sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), which is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH))

Comparability
Aside from changes in universe and NHIS redesign, this variable is comparable over time.
The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
