Description

For sample adults and sample children who have ever had a job that exposed them to loud noise 4 or more hours a day, several days a week (HRISKWRKEV), HRISKWRKTIM reports how many years the individual was exposed to loud sounds or noise for 4 or more hours a day, several days a week. In 2007, this question was asked to only sample adults.

For a full list of hearing related variables available for all years, see HEARING.

Comparability

Because the intervals used to record respondents' answers varies over time, IPUMS NHIS uses a composite coding system for HRISKWRKTIM to maximize comparability.

The first digit identifies time periods which can be identified in all years: less than one year (code 1), 1 to 2 years (code 2), 3 to 4 years (code 3), 5 to 9 years (code 4), and 10 years or more (code 5). The second digit identify periods specified for only a subgroup of years.

In addition to changes in universe, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
