Description

For sample adults and sample children aged 2-17 in 1999 and all persons in other surveyed years, DEN2WNO records the number of times she/he went to the dentist in the past 2 weeks.

Related Variables

Persons who reported visiting the dentist during the past 2 weeks were asked a number of follow-up questions on the types of dentists seen, the types of procedures received, and the travel time to dentist.

For persons who visited a dentist in the past two weeks, additional information is available on the number of visits to specific types of dentists and for specific procedures:

 

  • DENREGVNO: records the number of visits in the past two weeks to a regular dentist.
  • DENSPECVNO: records the number of visits in the past two weeks to a dental specialist. See the variable description for information on follow-up questions on the type of specialist seen.
  • DENUNKVNO: records the number of visits in the past to an unknown type of dentist.
  • DENTPROCNO: records the number of different types of dental procedures received in the past two weeks for gum treatment.
  • DENTBRIDGE: records the number of visits in the past two weeks for work done on a bridge.
  • DENTCLEN: records the number of visits in the past two weeks to have teeth cleaned.
  • DENTCDENT: records the number of visits in the past two weeks for work done on complete dentures.
  • DENTPDENT: records the number of visits in the past two weeks for work done on partial dentures.
  • DENTFTEE: records the number of visits in the past two weeks for dentures (type not specified).
  • DENTCROWN: records the number of visits in the past two weeks for work on a crown or cap.
  • DENTEXAM: records the number of visits in the past two weeks for an examination or x-ray.
  • DENTEXAM2: records the number of visits in the past two weeks for an examination (x-rays measured separately).
  • DENTXRAY: records the number of visits in the past two weeks for an x-ray.
  • DENTEXTR: records the number of visits in the past two weeks for a dental extraction or other oral surgery (1971 quarters 1-2).

For persons who visited a dental specialist in the past two weeks, additional information is available for the type of specialist seen in each visit for up to 10 visits:

 

  • DENTYPVIS1: type of dental specialist seen during first dental visit during the past two weeks.
  • DENTYPVIS2: type of dental specialist seen during second dental visit during the past two weeks.
  • DENTYPVIS3: type of dental specialist seen during third dental visit during the past two weeks.
  • DENTYPVIS4: type of dental specialist seen during fourth dental visit during the past two weeks.
  • DENTYPVIS5: type of dental specialist seen during fifth dental visit during the past two weeks.
  • DENTYPVIS6: type of dental specialist seen during sixth dental visit during the past two weeks.
  • DENTYPVIS7: type of dental specialist seen during seventh dental visit during the past two weeks.
  • DENTYPVIS8: type of dental specialist seen during eighth dental visit during the past two weeks.
  • DENTYPVIS9: type of dental specialist seen during ninth dental visit during the past two weeks.
  • DENTYPVIS10: type of dental specialist seen during tenth dental visit during the past two weeks.

Information on the travel times in minutes for dental visits during the past two weeks is also available:

 

  • DENTRAVTIMEN: average travel time for dental visits in past two weeks.

Comparability

Prior to 1999, this question was asked of all persons. Subsequently the universe was restricted to sample adults and children age 2 and over.

  • 1973; 1974; 1976; 1977; 1983; 1986; 1989: All persons.
  • 1999: Sample adults age 18+ and sample children age 2 to 17 who saw a dentist during past 2 weeks.
