Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults in 2002 who had used natural herbs for their health during the past 12 months (HERYR), HERYTREAT indicates whether the herbs were used to treat a specific health problem or condition.
HERYTREAT is part of a series of variables dealing with herbal supplements, based on questions fielded in 2000, 2002, or 2007. For more information on the purpose of these variables, along with a list of all herbal supplements that respondents could report using, a discussion of related herbal supplement variables, and a definition of natural herbs, see HERYR and HERMO.

The aforementioned variables indicating which conditions respondents treated via a natural herb provide a "yes" or "no" response for each condition. Analysts interested in the conditions that natural herbs were used to treat may wish to consult the following variables, as well:
- Number of conditions treated with herbs, past 12 months (HERYCONNO)
- degree of help from natural herbs (HERYCON1HELP, HERYCON2HELP, HERYCON3HELP)
- reasons for using natural herbs (HERYINTER, HERYMEDCOST, HERYMEDFAIL, HERYHCREC)
In 2007, the NHIS collected information about the use of herbal supplements in the past 30 days to treat specific health problems (see HER1TREAT and HER2TREAT). As in 2002, dichotomous variables in 2007 indicate whether individuals used herbs to treat a wide range of specific health problems
