Description

For sample adults in 2007 who had taken one or more herbal supplements during the past 30 days (HERMO) and had taken the first herbal supplement to prevent (but not to treat) a specific health problem or condition (HER1PREV), HER1PGYN indicates whether the person had used an herbal supplement to prevent a gynecological problem.

Related Variables

Gynecological problem was one of 87 possible specific conditions that respondents could report preventing with herbal supplements.

The other such conditions are:

  • other nerve damage, including carpal tunnel syndrome (HER1PCTS)
  • dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (HER1PDEMENT)
  • joint pain or stiffness/other joint condition (HER1PJNTPAIN)
  • memory loss or loss of other cognitive function (HER1PMEMLOS)
  • migraine or severe headache (HER1PMIG)
  • missing limbs (fingers, toes or digits), amputee (HER1PMLIMB)
  • circulation problems (other than in the legs) (HER1PNLCIRC)
  • other developmental problem (HER1PODD)
  • knee problems (not arthritis, not joint injury) (HER1POKNEE)
  • polio (myelitis), paralysis, para/quadriplegia (HER1PPOLIO)
  • substance abuse, other than alcohol or tobacco (HER1PSUBST)

Persons taking more than one herbal supplement during the past 30 days were also asked whether their second herbal supplement was used to prevent a specific problem or condition (HER2PREV) and, if so, what was that condition. Similarly, persons taking vitamin supplements during the past 30 days (VITMO) were asked whether those vitamin supplements were used to prevent a specific condition (see VIT1PREV and VIT2PREV).

HER1MOST reports the specific first herbal supplement (out of 45 possible herbs) that was taken most often by the respondent. Analysts interested in the prevention of a gynecological problem by other herbal or vitamin supplements should see the related variables HER2PGYN, VIT1PGYN, and VIT2PGYN. The corresponding variables HER2MOST, VIT1MOST, and VIT2MOST indicate which herbal or vitamin supplement was taken.

Sample adults and sample children were also asked about their use of herbal supplements to treat (rather than to prevent) health problems or conditions (HER1TREAT and HER2TREAT). Researchers interested in the use of herbal supplements to treat a gynecological problem should see HER1TGYN and HER2TGYN. For more information on the full range of variables related to the use of herbal supplements, see HERMO.
