Description

For sample adults and sample children in 2007 who had taken one or more vitamin supplements during the past 30 days (VITMOSUPNO), VIT1MOST reports the first of two vitamin or mineral supplements that the respondent had taken most often.

Sample adults and respondents for sample children were shown the same list of 20 vitamins and minerals and asked, "Which two of these vitamin supplements did [you/(sample child's name)] take the most in the past 30 days?" Interviewers were given the instruction, "If respondent cannot choose two vitamins/minerals used most often, probe for the two most important for health." See VITMOCALC for the full list of vitamin and mineral supplements shown to sample adults and respondents for sample children.

Related Variables

The herb identified in VIT1MOST is used to fill in question wording on many subsequent survey items. For example, VIT1WELL asks, "Did you use [fill: 1st vitamin] for any of these reasons? ... For general health or wellness?"

For sample persons who had taken two or more vitamin supplements in the past 30 days, parallel information was recorded on the second of the two vitamin supplements that the respondent had taken most often. (See VIT2MOST.)

For more information on the full range of variables related to vitamin and mineral supplements, including definitions, see VITMO.
