Description

For sample adults in 2007 who had taken two or more herbal supplements during the past 30 days (HERMOSUPNO), HER2PREV indicates whether the second herb was taken to prevent a specific disease or health problem.

HER2PREV is part of a series of variables dealing with herbal supplements, based on questions fielded in 2000, 2002, or 2007. For more information on the purpose of these inquiries, along with a list of all herbal supplements that respondents could report using and a discussion of related herbal supplement variables, see HERMO and HERYR.

Follow-Up Questions: Conditions Prevented

Sample adults who had used their second herbal supplement to prevent a specific disease or problem were also asked what that condition was. There are 87 variables indicating specific conditions that respondents used a second herbal supplement to prevent.

 

The specific conditions recorded are:

  • other nerve damage, including carpal tunnel syndrome (HER2PCTS)
  • dementia, including Alzheimer's disease (HER2PDEMENT)
  • joint pain or stiffness/other joint condition (HER2PJNTPAIN)
  • memory loss or loss of other cognitive function (HER2PMEMLOS)
  • migraine or severe headache (HER2PMIG)
  • missing limbs (fingers, toes or digits), amputee (HER2PMLIMB)
  • circulation problems (other than in the legs) (HER2PNLCIRC)
  • other developmental problem (HER2PODD)
  • knee problems (not arthritis, not joint injury) (HER2POKNEE)
  • polio (myelitis), paralysis, para/quadriplegia (HER2PPOLIO)
  • substance abuse, other than alcohol or tobacco (HER2PSUBST)

The aforementioned variables indicating which conditions respondents prevented via a second herbal supplement provide a "yes" or "no" response for each condition.

For sample adults who took a first herbal supplement in the past 30 days to prevent a specific condition (HER1PREV), parallel information was collected on the conditions respondents tried to prevent with that first herbal supplement. (See, for example, HER1PADD.)
