Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample adults in 2002 who had used high dose or megavitamin therapy for their own health during the past 12 months (VITYR), VITYTREAT indicates whether the high dose vitamins were used to treat a specific health problem or condition.
VITYTREAT is part of a series of variables dealing with vitamin supplements, based on questions fielded in 1992, 2000, 2002, 2005, or 2007. For a list of all vitamin supplements that respondents could report using, a discussion of related vitamin supplement variables in 2002, and a definition of high dose or megavitamin therapy, see VITYR. For information about inquiries about into vitamin supplement intake in other years, see VITMO and VITANY.

The aforementioned variables indicating which conditions respondents treated via high dose or megavitamin therapy provide a "yes" or "no" response for each condition. Analysts interested in the conditions that megavitamin therapy was used to treat may wish to consult the following variables from 2002, as well:
- Number of conditions treated with vitamins, past 12 months (VITYCONNO)
- Degree of help from vitamins (VITYCON1HELP, VITYCON2HELP, VITYCON3HELP)
- Reasons for using vitamins (VITYINTER, VITYMEDCOST, VITYMEDFAIL, VITYHCREC)
In 2007, the NHIS collected information about the use of vitamin supplements (with no dosage level specified) in the past 30 days to treat specific health problems (see VIT1TREAT and VIT2TREAT). As in 2002, dichotomous variables in 2007 indicate whether individuals used vitamins to treat a wide range of specific health problems, but vitamin intake in those 2007 variables refers to supplements at any dosage level in the past month.
