- PSALNO: Time since most recent PSA test: Number of units
- PSALTP: Time since most recent PSA test: Time period
- PSALEST: Time since most recent PSA test: Rough estimate
- PSALGYRR1: Time since most recent PSA test: Grouped year recode 1 (2000 method)
- PSALGYRR2: Time since most recent PSA test: Grouped year recode 2 (2005 method)
From 2005 forward, the survey form directed interviewers to, "Read if necessary. A PSA test is blood test to detect prostate cancer. It is also called a prostate-specific antigen test."
The 2000 and 2015 Field Representative's Manual discussed the purpose of the PSA:
The Manual from 2005 and forward add that, "It is mainly used to monitor changes in PSA levels over time in a given patient."
The 2000 Manual also explains that Prostate Specific Antigen is useful as, "A test of the level of PSA in the blood test that may indicate the presence of prostate cancer." The Manuals from 2003, 2005, 2008 gave similar explanations for PSA. In 2015, the Manual explains "A PSA test is a blood test to detect prostate cancer. It is also called a prostate-specific antigen test."
The Manuals for 2005, 2008 and forward also defined cancer as, "...a term for diseases in which abnormal cells divide without control. Cancer cells can invade nearby tissue and can spread through the bloodstream and lymphatic system to other parts of the body (Definition from the HP2010 objectives)."
Comparability
Comparability may be affected by changes in the universe and the 2019 questionnaire redesign. The universe for 1999 is "male sample adults age 40+ who ever heard of PSA test." The universe for 2000 and 2003 is "male sample adults age 40+ who ever heard of PSA test or refused knowledge of PSA test." The universe for 2005 and later years is "male sample adults age 40+." Additionally, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
