PSANO5YR is a 2-digit numeric variable measured on a continuous scale of 0 to 95. In 2000 only, responses were top coded at 11. In 2019 only, responses were top coded at 20. In 2023 only, responses were top coded at 6. Special value codes are as follows:

98: Unknown - Not ascertained
99: Unknown - Don't know
Description
For male sample adults aged 40 years and older who have had a PSA test (PSAEV) within the last 10 years, or refused or don't know (PSALEST), PSANO5YR reports the number of PSA tests that the respondent had in the previous 5 years.

Comparability
The top codes for this variable have changed over time. In 2000, the number of PSA tests was top coded at 11 or more, in 2019, it was top coded at 20 or more, and in 2023 it was top coded at 6 or more PSA tests. There is no top code imposed for other years. Additionally, the NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content.
