WHEZYR identifies sample adults and sample children who had a wheezing or whistling sound in their chest during the past 12 months.

Those who answered affirmatively to WHEZYR were asked a series of follow-up questions, which are represented by the following variables:

• Number wheezing attacks (WHEZATAKNO)

• Wheezing disturbs sleep (WHEZSLEEP)

• Times per week wheezing disturbed sleep (WHEZSLEEPNO)

• Chest sounds wheezy after exercise (WHEZEXER)

• Wheezing ever limit speech (WHEZBARTALK)

• Number doctor/hospital ER visits for wheezing (WHEZVISITNO)

• How much wheezing limited activity (WHEZLIMITACT)

• Days missed due to wheezing (WHEZDAYR)

WHEZYR and the aforementioned follow-up questions appeared on the survey form directly after a series of questions relating to asthma. Both the asthma questions and those relating to wheezing were preceded on the survey form by the statement "The next 15 questions are periodic asthma questions." Researchers should, however, be cautious in their interpretation of a "yes" response to WHEZYR and its follow-up questions. While a wheezing or whistling sound in the chest could be due to asthma, it might be caused by some other condition, such as emphysema or chronic bronchitis.
