Description
For sample children, NUMRESPRNT indicates the number of residential parents.
Related Variables
The redesign of the survey in 2019 dramatically changed the way demographic information was collected. Prior to 2019, one adult was chosen from each family to respond to questions about all the members of that family, and NCHS released that information as a family-level data file. Post-redesign, general demographic information is only collected at the household level. In households that contain more than one family, the sample adult and sample child may not belong to the same family. NCHS now includes a few variables in the sample child file that describe various characteristics of the sample child's co-resident parents. For all variables, PAR1 or PAR2 will always refer to the same individual (i.e. if PAR1AGE = 42 and PAR1SEX = Male, users can conclude that PAR1 is a 42-year-old male).
