Codes and Frequencies
Description
For sample children (or sample children with at least one residential parent prior to 2021), PAR1REL reports the relationship type between the first residential parent and the sample child. The relationship between the sample child and a second residential parent is indicated by PAR2REL.
Related Variables
PAR1REL is one of several variables that NCHS makes available about the demographic characteristics of parents of sample children. For a complete list of these variables, see the variable description for NUMRESPRNT.
Comparability
Between 2020 and 2021, the universe for PAR1REL changed from "sample children with at least one residential parent" to "all sample children." This change resulted in the introduction of new variable codes, as well the division of code 3 (Other or unknown) into code 4 (Other) and codes 7, 8, and 9 (Unknown). Users wishing to compare data from 2021-onward to that from 2019-202 should combine 2021 codes 0 (Not in Universe) and 4 (No residential parent), as well as combining codes 3, 7, 8, and 9.
