About High Deductible Health Plans

The term high-deductible health plan (HDHP) refers to a health insurance plan with a large annual deductible and lower monthly premiums than more traditional plans. A plan is considered high-deductible if the deductible exceeds an annual threshold set each year by the Internal Revenue Service. Below is a table showing the HDHP threshold for each year that NHIS asked questions about health plan deductible amounts.

Year Individual HDHP Threshold
2019 $1,350
2020 $1,400
2021 $1,400
