For sample adults in 2007 who had taken two or more vitamin supplements during the past 30 days (VITMOSUPNO) and had taken the second vitamin supplement to treat or cure a specific health problem or condition (VIT2TREAT), VIT2TSURG identifies those who had also received surgery for the condition for which they most used the second vitamin supplement (VIT2TCONMOST).
Interviewers asked, "Did you receive any of these conventional medical treatments for [condition for which second vitamin supplement was used the most]?" and entered all treatments reported by the respondent.
For persons who had received such surgery (i.e., those with a "yes" response in VIT2TSURG), the complementary variable VIT2TSURGTIM indicates whether they received such surgery before, at about the same time, or after they began taking the second vitamin supplement.
The survey question for VIT2TSURG also collected information about the use of other conventional medical treatments (or no conventional treatment) for the condition for which the second vitamin supplement was used the most, including:
- Mental health counseling (VIT2TCOUN)
- Prescription medications (VIT2TPMED)
- Over-the-counter medications (VIT2TNPMED)
- Physical therapy (VIT2TPT)
- No conventional treatment (VIT2TNOCONV)
For respondents who had taken at least one vitamin supplement during the past 30 days (VITMOSUPNO) and had taken the first vitamin supplement to treat or cure a specific health problem or condition (VIT1TREAT), information was similarly collected on whether the person also received surgery or other forms of conventional medical treatment for the condition for which they most used the first vitamin supplement (VIT1TCONMOST). See, for example, VIT1TSURG.
