Description

TBINSECT indicates whether the respondent believed that TB can be spread by mosquito or other insect bites. In 1994 and 1995, this question was asked of sample adults who reported knowing "a lot," "some," or "a little" about tuberculosis (TB) (TBKNOW) and who responded, "Yes" to the question, "Do you know how TB is spread from one person to another?" (TBKNOWSPRED). From 2000 forward, this question was asked of sample adults who reported knowing "a lot," "some," or "a little" about tuberculosis (TB) (TBKNOW) and who responded, "Yes" to the question, "Have you ever heard of tuberculosis?" (TBHEARD).

Data Collection Methods

The basic methodology employed to collect the information in TBINSECT was similar in 1994-1995 and 2000 forward, but the details differed slightly between the two periods.

 

In 1994 and 1995, interviewers asked, "As you understand it, how is TB spread from one person to another?" Respondents were then handed a card with five specific choices (including "from mosquito or other insect bites") plus "other." (In 1994 and 1995, the categories were read to respondents for phone interviews.) The survey form directed interviewers to probe for additional answers by asking, "Any other way?" and to mark all categories chosen by the respondent.

From 2000 forward, interviewers asked, "How is TB spread?" Respondents were then handed a card with five specific choices (including "from mosquito or other insect bites") plus "other." From 2001 forward, the card included the statement, "You may choose more than one." The survey form directed interviewers to probe for additional answers by asking, "Can TB be spread in any other way?" and to mark all categories chosen by the respondent.

While transmission via insect bites was included as a choice for both 1994-1995 and 2000 forward, the full range of choices for modes of TB transmission differed somewhat between the two periods.

 

In 1994 and 1995, the other choices specified on the flashcard were:

  • Breathing the air around a person who is sick with TB (TBSICKAIR)
  • Through food and water (TBFOOD)
  • By sexual intercourse (TBSEX)

From 2000 forward, other choices specified on the flashcard were:

  • Breathing the air around a person who is sick with TB (TBSICKAIR)
  • Sharing eating / drinking utensils (TBDISHES)
  • Through semen or vaginal secretions shared during sexual intercourse (TBSEX)

Comparability

Apart from universe changes and slight differences in question wording noted in the variable description, TBINSECT is comparable across survey years.

Universe

  • 1994-1995: Half of sample persons age 18+ (excluded from Y2K supplement) who know a lot, some, or a little about TB (or for whom it was unknown how much they know about TB), and who know how TB is spread from one person to another.
  • 2000-2010: Sample adults age 18+ who have heard of TB and reported knowing a lot, some, or a little about TB.
