Description

For persons who lost their job or whose family member lost their job and lost health care coverage due to this job loss (LAIDOFLOSHI ="2") , this variable indicates if the respondent was covered through any public insurance programs, such as Medicaid, Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), or military benefit programs.

Related variables
Respondents who answered affirmatively were asked about the length of time covered by some health care program (HINOJLITIM).

For 1983, 1984, and 1986, persons who lost their coverage through a lay-off were asked if they were without coverage (HINOLAIDOF) for any time during the job-lay off.

For 1983, 1984, 1986, and 1989, persons were asked for how many months they were not covered by any health insurance plan (HINOLAPYMO).

For 1989, respondents who lost coverage through their job were also asked about coverage through some other (private) plan during the lay-off (HINOJLOI).

Comparability

Changes in the universe between 1989 and prior years reduce comparability. Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
