Description

For persons who lost their job or whose family member lost their job and lost health insurance coverage due to this job loss (LAIDOFLOSHI ="2"), and indicated they were covered by some public health insurance program during the lay-off (HINOJLCOV ="2"), HINOJLITIM indicates the length of time covered by a public health care program (such as Medicaid, Aid to Families with Dependent Children (AFDC), or military benefit programs).

Related Variables

For 1983, 1984 and 1986, prior to the question for HINOJLITIM, respondents were asked if they were without any other (private) health insurance, other than public programs, at any time during the lay-off (HINOLAIDOF).

In 1989, prior to the question for HINOJLITIM, respondents were asked if they were covered by any other insurance plan (HINOJLOI).

For 1983, 1984, 1986, and 1989, those who were not covered by any other plan were asked how long they were not covered by any other health insurance plan (HINOLAPYMO).

Comparability

Apart from changes in the universe, there are no comparability issues.

For all years for which HINOJLITIM is available, respondents were not instructed whether to include single service plans when responding to this question.

Changes in survey design (e.g., quarters in which the supplement was collected) may affect raw frequencies, but do not affect comparability of the variable. As always, data users should use the prescribed IPUMS NHIS weights.
