Description

For sample adults, DISRESPCT indicates how often the respondent felt they were treated with less courtesy or respect than other people. Interviewers preceded this question with the statement, “These next questions are about times and places where you were treated unfairly. In your day-to-day life how often have any of the following things happened to you?”

DISRESPCT is one of a series of questions asked in 2023 from the Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) – Short Version and the abbreviated 4-item Heightened Vigilance Scale (HVS). These questions were added to the Sample Adult interview to better understand how discrimination relates to health outcomes, and how heightened vigilance may mediate those associations.

NCHS cautions that the EDS and HVS responses may not have consistent meanings across population subgroups. It is recommended that users avoid direct comparisons of EDS and HVS responses and scale scores across subgroups (i.e., men and women). Instead, NCHS recommends that users use these variables within subgroups to study the associations with other health outcomes collected with the NHIS.
