For sample adults, VIGAPPEAR indicates how often, in their day-to-day lives, the respondent feels that they always have to be very careful about their appearance to get good service or avoid being harassed.

VIGAPPEAR is one of a series of questions asked in 2023 from the Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) – Short Version and the abbreviated 4-item Heightened Vigilance Scale (HVS). These questions were added to the Sample Adult interview to better understand how discrimination relates to health outcomes, and how heightened vigilance may mediate those associations.
