For sample adults, VIGSAY indicates how often, in their day-to-day lives, the respondent carefully watches what they say and how they say it.

VIGSAY is one of a series of questions asked in 2023 from the Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS) – Short Version and the abbreviated 4-item Heightened Vigilance Scale (HVS). These questions were added to the Sample Adult interview to better understand how discrimination relates to health outcomes, and how heightened vigilance may mediate those associations.
