Description
CANOCOUNSL reports the main reason the sample person did not receive counseling after their cancer diagnosis. In 1992 this inquiry was directed at sample persons age 18 years and over who were ever diagnosed with one kind of cancer (CANCEREV, CANCERNO) and were diagnosed in the past 10 years (CAN1DIAGDY, CAN1DIAGE) or who were diagnosed with more than one kind of cancer (CANCERNO) who's most recent cancer was diagnose in the past 10 years (CANRECDIAGDY, CANRECDIAGE) and who did not receive professional counseling or join a support group (CANCOUNSL). In 2010 it was directed at sample persons 18 years and over who were ever told they had cancer (CANCEREV) and did not receive professional counseling or joining a support group to cope with cancer diagnosis (CANCOUNSL).
Possible responses to this question in 1992 were "didn't know it was available", "didn't want it", "didn't think I needed it", or "some other reason". In 2010 all the same responses were repeated with the additional response category "I couldn't afford it".
Sample persons who gave the response "didn't know it was available" in CANOCOUNSL were then asked if they would have been interested in receiving counseling after their cancer diagnosis (CANINTCOUNSL).
Universe
- 1992: Sample persons age 18+ in quarters 1 and 2 and in 2 weeks of quarter 3 who were ever diagnosed with one kind of cancer and were diagnosed in the past 10 years OR who were diagnosed with more than one kind of cancer and most recent cancer was diagnosed in the past 10 years AND did not receive counseling or join support group.
- 2010: Sample adults 18+ who were ever told they had cancer and did not receive professional counseling or join a support group to help cope with cancer diagnosis.
