Description

CANCOUNSL indicates if the sample person received professional counseling or joined any support group to help cope with their cancer diagnosis. In 1992 this inquiry was directed at sample persons age 18 years and over who were ever diagnosed with one kind of cancer (CANCEREV, CANCERNO) and were diagnosed in the past 10 years (CAN1DIAGDY, CAN1DIAGE) or who were diagnosed with more than one kind of cancer (CANCERNO) and most recent cancer was diagnose in the past 10 years (CANRECDIAGDY, CANRECDIAGE). In 2010 it was directed at sample persons 18 years and over who were ever told they had cancer (CANCEREV).

The field representative's manual defines counseling or support groups as "counseling or support groups to help cope with cancer. Includes but is not limited to: personal counseling, cancer counseling, family counseling, religious counseling, cancer patient support groups".

Sample persons who did not give an affirmative response to CANCOUNSL were asked follow-up questions about their main reason for not receiving professional counseling or joining a support group (CANOCOUNSL).
