Description
For sample adults who report having difficulty speaking or slurred speech with symptoms of dizziness or a balance problem, BALWOSLUR reports whether the respondent had slurred speech only when they have the dizziness problem (IPUMS NHIS code "1") or regardless of the dizziness problem (IHIS code "2"). The survey includes instructions to indicate that "only when" refers to "around the same time, or just before, during or following" the dizziness problem.
Respondents were first asked to identify the most bothersome dizziness symptom (BALSBOTHER). Interviewers then proceeded to ask whether any of 22 symptoms occur around the time of the dizziness (for the full list, see BALWSLUR).
In 2008, this variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Affirmative responses for each symptom were followed by a question as to whether the symptom occurred only around the time of have the dizziness or balance problem, or regardless of it. The other 21 symptoms are included in the 2008 Supplement.
