Description

For sample adults who report having neck pain with symptoms of dizziness or a balance problem, BALWONECKP reports whether the respondent had the neck pain only when they have the dizziness problem (IPUMS NHIS code "1") or regardless of the dizziness problem (IHIS code "2"). The survey includes instructions to indicate that "only when" refers to "around the same time, or just before, during or following" the dizziness problem.

Respondents were first asked to identify the most bothersome dizziness symptom (BALSBOTHER). Interviewers then proceeded to ask whether any of 22 symptoms occur around the time of the dizziness (for the full list, see BALWNECKP).

In 2008, this variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

The supplement consisted of a total 205 questions (some of which were only asked based on a previous response). For a further description of the Supplement and a list of topics included in it, see BALDIZYR
