Description
BALSBOTHER reports the most bothersome dizziness or balance symptom experienced in the last 12 months. The universe for this variable changes over time. Please see the Comparability Tab for more information.
The question for this variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.
Comparability
In 2016, an additional response category was added: "Other dizziness or balance problem." Additionally, the universe is slightly different between 2008 and 2016. In 2008, sample adults aged 18+ who reported at least one symptom of a dizziness or balance problem (BALSYMPTNO greater than or equal to 1) were included in the universe. In 2016, the universe was slightly more expansive; sample adults aged 18+ who reported at least one symptom of a dizziness or balance problem (BALSYMPTNO greater than or equal to 1) or who reported having experienced a dizziness or balance problem in the past 12 months ("yes" on BALDIZYR) without specifying a symptom of a dizziness or balance problem were asked about their most bothersome symptom (BALSYMPTNO equal to 0). This may affect comparability.
Universe
- 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who had at least one symptom of dizziness or balance problem.
- 2016: Sample adults 18+ who have ever had a problem with dizziness or balance and have had a problem with dizziness or balance in the past 12 months OR sample adults who have ever reported having a symptom of at least one specific dizziness or balance problem in the past 12 months but did not specify a symptom or dizziness symptomp problem that they experienced.
