Description

For sample adults who feel a health professional helped their symptoms of dizziness or balance problems (in 2008, BALHPHELP, and in 2016, BALHPHELPHOW), BALHPHELPNO reports the number of days, weeks, months, or years it took to begin to feel helped by treatment or advice.

Users should use BALHPHELPNO in conjunction with BALHPHELPTP for the type of time period associated with the number of time units reported in this variable.

This variable is part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

Comparability

Please see the Universe tab for universe changes over time for this variable as different years reference different variables for their universe. This variable dependent on two variables; in 2008, this variable is dependent on an affirmative response to BALHPHELP, which reports whether the person felt that any of the health professional(s) they saw helped with dizziness or balance problem. Beginning in 2012, this variable is dependent on any response other than "no help at all" to the variable BALHPHELPHOW, which reports how much the person felt that any of the health professional(s) they saw helped with dizziness or balance problem. In 2008, this variable refers to their "most bothersome dizziness or balance problem;" in 2016, this variable refers to more generally to "dizziness or balance problem(s)."

Universe

  • 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who feel a health professional helped their symptoms of dizziness or balance problem.
  • 2016: Sample adults 18+ who had a dizziness or balance problem in the past 12 months or who identified at least one symptom in the past 12 months and who think a health professional helped their symptoms of dizziness or balance problem.
