For sample adults who feel they have been helped by a doctor or health professional, including ER physicians, for symptoms of dizziness or a balance problem problems (in 2008, BALHPHELP, and in 2016, BALHPHELPHOW), BALHPHELPTP reports the time between when the person first time saw the health professional until they began feeling helped the advice or treatment.
Users should use BALHPHELPTP in conjunction with BALHPHELPNO which reports the number of time units associated with the time period reported in this variable.
The questions associated with this variable was part of the Sample Adult Balance Supplement, sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders.

This variable dependent on two variables; in 2008, this variable is dependent on an affirmative response to BALHPHELP, which reports whether the person felt that any of the health professional(s) they saw helped with dizziness or balance problem. Beginning in 2012, this variable is dependent on any response other than "no help at all" to the variable BALHPHELPHOW, which reports how much the person felt that any of the health professional(s) they saw helped with dizziness or balance problem. In 2008, this variable refers to their "most bothersome dizziness or balance problem;" in 2016, this variable refers to more generally to "dizziness or balance problem(s)."
- 2008: Sample adults age 18+ who feel a health professional helped their symptoms of dizziness or balance problem.
- 2016: Sample adults 18+ who had a dizziness or balance problem in the past 12 months or who identified at least one symptom in the past 12 months and who think a health professional helped their symptoms of dizziness or balance problem.
