Description
For sample adults who have ever had a skin cancer exam (SKNCANX), SKNXMGYR reports the grouped number of years since the respondent's last skin exam by a dermatologist or other physician.
In 1998, this is a direct question asked of sample adults who ever had a skin cancer exam.
In 2000, 2010 and 2015, SKNXMGYR is a recoded variable based on responses from the following variables:
The 2000 NHIS public use files include another summary recode, SKNXMRMO, which reports the time, in months, since the last skin exam was done.
The 2000 NHIS Survey Description advises data analysts to use the summary recodes (SKNXMRMO, SKNXMGYR) "rather than the answers to the original subquestions [SKNXMDMO, SKNXMDYR, SKNXMNO, SKNXMTP, SKNXMEYR]" since "the recodes include all respondents who were eligible for the test, while the raw answers applied only to the subset of respondents who gave the time in a particular format."
The 2010 and 2015 NHIS public use files include another summary recode, SKNXMGYR2 which recodes the same variables as above by the 2005 method instead of the 2000 method.
