Description
For sample children in 2007 who had taken vitamins or minerals in the past 30 days (VITMO) and who had taken herbal supplements to improve athletic or sports performance in the past 30 days (VITSP), VITSPVITK indicates whether the child had taken vitamin K to improve athletic or sports performance.
Persons responding for sample children were shown a flash card containing a list of vitamins and minerals and were asked, "During the past 30 days, did [sample child's name] take any vitamins or minerals listed on this card to improve athletic or sports performance?" Respondents who answered affirmatively (i.e., a "Yes" response in VITSP) were asked, "Which vitamins or minerals did [sample child's name] take to improve athletic or sports performance?" Interviewers were told to "enter all that apply."
Related Variables
Vitamin K was one of 20 possible specific vitamins and minerals that respondents could report sample children had used to improve sports performance in the past month.
The other such vitamins and minerals are:
- Calcium (VITSPCALC)
- Coral calcium (VITSPCCALC)
- Chromium (VITSPCHRO)
- Folic acid/folate (VITSPFOLIC)
- Iron (VITSPIRON)
- Magnesium (VITSPMAG)
- Niacin (VITSPNIA)
- Vitamin Packet (VITSPPACK)
- Potassium (VITSPPOTA)
- Selenium (VITSPSELN)
- Vitamin A (VITSPVITA)
- Vitamin B6 (VITSPVITB6)
- Vitamin B12 (VITSPVITB12)
- Vitamin B complex (VITSPVITB)
- Vitamin C (VITSPVITC)
- Vitamin D (VITSPVITD)
- Vitamin E (VITSPVITE)
- Zinc (VITSPZINC)
- Multivitamin and/or mineral combination (VITSPCOMBO)
Sample adults were also asked whether they had taken vitamins/minerals for improved sports performance (VIT1SPORT and VIT2SPORT), but, unlike sample children, they were not asked which particular vitamins or minerals were taken for that purpose. VIT1MOST and VIT2MOST indicate which vitamins/minerals sample adults (and sample children) took most often. Thus, researchers interested in the use of vitamin or mineral supplements for improved sports performance may wish to consult these variables as they pertain to sample adults, bearing in mind that the vitamin/mineral supplements taken most often are not necessarily the ones taken for improved sports performance.
