For sample children in 2007 who had taken vitamin or mineral supplements in the past 30 days (VITMO), VITSP indicates whether the child had taken any vitamins or minerals to improve athletic or sports performance.

Related Variables

Respondents for sample children were shown a flash card containing a list of vitamin and mineral supplements and were asked to report if the child had taken any of these supplements for improved athletic or sports performance.

The supplements included are:

  • Multi-vitamin and/or mineral combination (VITSPCOMBO)

In 2007, sample adults could also report that they had taken a vitamin or mineral supplement to improve sports performance (VIT1SPORT and VIT2SPORT). Unlike sample children, however, sample adults were not asked to report which vitamins or minerals they had taken for this purpose.

The 2007 NHIS also collected information on sample persons' use of herbal supplements to improve athletic or sports performance. There are 45 specific herbal supplements that respondents could report were used by sample children. See HERSPMO for more information. For sample adults who used an herbal supplement for improved sports performance, see HER1SPORT and HER2SPORT.

VITSP is only available for 2007.
