Description

For sample persons age 55, this variable indicates if the respondent ever had rheumatic heart disease. The inquiry did not require a diagnosis by a medical doctor or health professional. A definition of rheumatic heart disease was not provided in the 1984 Field Representative's Manual and the term was assumed to be respondent defined.

This variable was part of the 1984 Supplement on Aging. The Supplement also asked respondents if they had or ever had vision, hearing, heart, and bone conditions and other impairments.
