For sample adults who are current cigarette smokers (SMOKFREQNOW) or former cigarette smokers who have quit in the past 12 months (SMOKFREQNOW, QUITTP, and QUITNO) or who currently smoke e-cigarettes (ECIGFREQNOW), cigars (CIGARFREQNOW), pipes (PIPEFREQNOW), or use smokeless tobacco (SMKLSFREQNOW) every or some days, MDSMQADVRX reports whether, during the past 12 months, a medical doctor or other health professional advised ways to stop smoking or prescribed medication to help quit..

In 2020, for sample adults who have seen a doctor or other health professional in the past year (DVINT) and are current cigarette smokers (SMOKFREQNOW) or former cigarette smokers who have quit in the past 12 months (SMOKFREQNOW, QUITTP, and QUITNO), MDSMQADV reports whether, during the past 12 months, a medical doctor or other health professional advised them to quit smoking. In 2015 and earlier years, MDSMQADV reports whether, during the past 12 months, a medical doctor or other health professional advised all sample adults 18 and older to quit smoking or quit using other kinds of tobacco.
