Description

For sample adults who have ever used an e-cigarette, ECIGED reports if the respondent currently uses an e-cigarette every day, some days, or not at all. E-cigarettes are described to "look like regular cigarettes, but are battery-powered and produce vapor instead of smoke." Only respondents who indicated that they had ever used an e-cigarette (ECIGEV) were asked this question.

ECIGED was introduced in 2014 as one of two new questions in the 2014 Adult Tobacco Use Supplement. The supplement included questions regarding the use of tobacco products, use of tobacco products other than cigarettes, use of smokeless tobacco, and use of electronic cigarettes, as part of the adult health behaviors section of the sample adult questionnaire.

Comparability

Aside from changes introduced with the 2019 redesign, there are no comparability issues. Questionnaire design changes introduced in 2019 limit comparability with earlier years. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content.
