Description

For sample adults, ECIGEV reports if the respondent has ever used an e-cigarette. E-cigarettes are described to "look like regular cigarettes, but are battery-powered and produce vapor instead of smoke."

ECIGEV was introduced in 2014 as one of two new questions in the 2014 Adult Tobacco Use Supplement. The supplement included questions regarding the use of tobacco products, use of tobacco products other than cigarettes, use of smokeless tobacco, and use of electronic cigarettes, as part of the adult health behaviors section of the sample adult questionnaire.

Comparability

The introduction of a substantially revised questionnaire in 2019 may affect comparability with earlier years. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content.
