Description

For sample adults 18 and older who have ever smoked a cigar (2000-forward), or sample adults who ever smoked a cigar and who did not refuse to answer whether they had smoked 50 cigars in their lifetime (1998), this variable reports whether the person now smokes a cigar every day, some days, or not at all.

The 2015 Field Representative's Manual defines "Cigars include the little cigars called 'cigarillos' in English, along with little filtered cigars. In Spanish, 'cigars' are called 'puro regular,' 'cigarillos' are called 'un puro tipo cigarrito,' and 'little filtered cigars' are called 'puro pequeños filtrados.' Do NOT include 'cigarrillos' as cigars when conducting a Spanish interview because 'cigarrillos' means 'cigarettes' in Spanish."

Comparability

Analysts should refer to the universe tab for minor changes in the universe across years.

The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
