Description

For sample children ages 5-17, GOSCHOOLEV indicates if the sample child has ever attended school.

GOSCHOOLEV is part of the Child Health supplement, first released in 1981. This supplement includes a number of questions on child's schooling. For related variables see below, use the search function or IPUMS NHIS drop-down menus.

Related Variables

Variables reporting information about current school attendance:

 

  • Sample child is currently attending or on vacation from school: GOSCHOOL
  • Sample child's current grade level, or the grade level she/he will be in if between grades: SCHOLGRADE
  • Sample child attends a special class to get special help because of a disability or health problem: GOSPSCHOLH
  • Sample child attends or needs to attend a special class to get special help because of a disability or health problem: GONEDSPSCHOL

  • EXPELWHY: Suspension, exclusion, or expulsion was for health or behavior reasons
  • SCONFEV: Ever had a non-routine conference with the school to discuss problems the sample child was having
  • SCONFTIMDA: Time since the last non-routine conference to discuss problems the sample child was having, in days
  • SCONFTIMMO : Time since the last non-routine conference to discuss problems the sample child was having, in months
  • SCONFTIMR: Time since the last non-routine conference to discuss problems the sample child was having, recoded into intervals

Variables related to grade repetition in school include:

 

  • GRADREPABSNT: Sample child repeated the grade because she/he was frequently absent
  • GRADREPDIFF: Sample child repeated the grade because she/he moved to a more difficult school
  • GRADREPFAIL: Sample child repeated the grade because of academic failure
  • GRADREPIMMAT : Sample child repeated the grade because she/he was too immature
  • GRADREPOTH: Sample child repeated the grade for some other reason
