Description
For sample children age 3 to 17 years (who do not have a developmental delay, learning disability, or emotional/behavioral problem for 1988) who have seen a psychiatrist, psychologist, or psychoanalyst about any emotional, mental, or behavioral problem/behavioral problem, this variable indicates if the sample child saw the counselor in the past year.
The Field Representative's Manuals do not specify what type of counselor should be included, therefore this term is assumed to be respondent defined.
Variables related to EMOCOUNSYR are included in the 1981 and 1988 survey.
These include:
- Ever saw counselor about emotional/behavioral problem (EMOCOUNSEV, 1981, 1988)
- Still seeing counselor about emotional problem (EMOCOUNSTIL1981, 1988)
- Needed help for emotional/behavioral problem, past 12 months (EMONEEDYR1981, 1988)
- Seeing counselor about emotional/behavioral problem: Recode (EMOCOUNSR 1981 only)
Comparability
The substantial change in universe makes comparison between the 1981 and 1988 survey difficult. As indicated above, although the universe for both surveys includes children who have ever seen a psychiatrist, psychologist, doctor, or counselor about any emotional, mental, or behavior problem (EMOCOUNSEV), only children who did not have any emotional, behavioral or developmental difficulties received this preceding filter question for EMOCOUNSYR. In 1981, all children were asked the question for EMOCOUNSEV.
