Description

BLADTROUBYRC indicates whether the person had chronic bladder trouble in the past year. This variable is created with supplemental programming by the IPUMS NHIS staff from the pre-1997 condition records. For general information about IHIS variables (such as BLADTROUBYRC) created from the pre-1997 condition records, see the User Note on Condition Records and Condition Variables.

Defining Bladder Trouble Records and Identifying Persons with Bladder Trouble

For all available years, persons who were asked a direct question about having bladder trouble and who have a chronic bladder trouble condition record are given a "Yes" code for BLADTROUBYRC. Persons who were asked a direct question about bladder trouble but do not have a chronic bladder trouble record are given a code of "No." Persons who were not asked a direct question about bladder trouble, or for whom it is unknown whether they were asked such a question, are given a code of "NIU" (not in universe), regardless of whether they have a chronic bladder trouble record.

1973 and 1978

For 1973 and 1978, bladder trouble records were defined as those condition records with any of the following codes in the variable DCICDCOD in the original NHIS public use files:

  • "5940" ("Calculus of other parts of urinary system")
  • "5950" ("Cystitis")
  • "5960" ("Other diseases of bladder: Fistula of bladder")
  • "5961" ("Other diseases of bladder: Diverticulum of bladder [acquired]")
  • "5962" ("Other diseases of bladder: Contracture of bladder [sphincter]")
  • "5963" ("Other diseases of bladder: Paralysis of bladder")
  • "5969" ("Other diseases of bladder: Other and unspecified diseases of bladder")

These condition code values come from the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) Revision 8. Additionally, to be considered "chronic," bladder trouble condition records must have a code of "1" ("Chronic") in the variable CACODE in the original NHIS public use files.

1979 to 1981

Beginning in 1979, NHIS began using ICD Revision 9 to code conditions. For 1979 to 1981, bladder trouble records were defined as those condition records with any of the following codes in the variable DCICDCOD in the original public use files:

  • "5941" ("Calculus of lower urinary tract: Other calculus in bladder")
  • "5951" ("Cystitis: Chronic interstitial cystitis")
  • "5952" ("Cystitis: Other chronic cystitis")
  • "5953" ("Cystitis: Trigonitis")
  • "5958" ("Cystitis: Other specified types of cystitis")
  • "5959" ("Cystitis: Cystitis, unspecified")
  • "5960" ("Other disorders of bladder: Bladder neck obstruction")
  • "5961" ("Other disorders of bladder: Intestinovesical fistula")
  • "5962" ("Other disorders of bladder: Vesical fistula, not elsewhere classified")
  • "5963" ("Other disorders of bladder: Diverticulum of bladder")
  • "5964" ("Other disorders of bladder: Atony of bladder")
  • "5965" ("Other disorders of bladder: Other functional disorders of bladder")
  • "5966" ("Other disorders of bladder: Rupture of bladder, nontraumatic")
  • "5967" ("Other disorders of bladder: Hemorrhage into bladder wall")
  • "5968" ("Other disorders of bladder: Other specified disorders of bladder")
  • "5969" ("Other disorders of bladder: Unspecified disorder of bladder")

As with earlier years, to be considered "chronic," bladder trouble condition records must also have a code of "1" ("Chronic") in the variable CACODE in the original NHIS public use files.

1982 to 1996

For 1982 to 1996, chronic bladder trouble records were defined as those condition records with a code of "412" ("Bladder infections") or a code of "413" ("Other disorders of bladder") in the variable C1CONDRC in the original NHIS public use files. This condition code value comes from NCHS's Diagnostic Recode C: Chronic Conditions and Impairments.

Weights
For 1973, BLADTROUBYRC should be weighted with PERWEIGHT.

For 1978 to 1981, BLADTROUBYRC should be weighted with CONDWT3.

For 1982 to 1996, BLADTROUBYRC should be weighted with CONDWT4.

Comparability

As with all of the person-level condition variables created by IHIS from condition records prior to 1997, the universe for BLADTROUBYRC is substantially different for 1978 forward than it is for years prior to 1978. Beginning in 1978, only persons living in 1/6 of households, rather than all persons, were asked a direct question about having bladder trouble in the past year. This change requires that different weight variables be used depending on which years of data are analyzed. See the "Description" tab for details.

Additionally, there is a change in the way "Yes" responses are coded over time. See the User Note on Condition Records and Condition Variables for details about the composite coding scheme employed by IHIS.

Universe

  • 1973: All persons.
  • 1978-1981: Persons living in 1/6 of households (who received Condition List 3).
  • 1982-1996: Persons living in 1/6 of households (who received Condition List 4).
