Description
For sample adults aged 18 and older and sample children aged 0 to 17 who have ever had a significant head injury (BALCONCUSNUM indicates the number of significant head injuries or concussions they had in their lifetime. Respondents were considered in universe if they answered yes for TBICONDAZYR, TBICONHEADYR,or BALCONCUSEV. In 2016, this question was asked of children aged 3 and older who reported having had a serious head injury or concussion (BALCONCUSEV).
This question was sponsored by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD); in 2016 as part of the Sample Child Balance Supplement, and in 2023 as part of a group of sponsored hearing questions.
Comparability
In 2016, code 5 was labeled "5-6" head injuries or concussions; it was changed to "5 or more" in 2023. Universe changes also affect comparability.
