Description
For sample adults and sample children who still have asthma (ASTHMASTIL) or who had an asthma episode/attack in the past 12 months (ASTHATAKYR), ASTHPINEV identifies those who ever used a prescription inhaler.
Those responding affirmatively to ASTHPINEV were asked a follow-up question about whether a health professional had shown them how to use their inhaler (ASTHINSHOW).
The 2003 survey also includes other questions about asthma medication. ASTHPINQUICK identifies persons who had used a prescription inhaler for quick relief of asthma in the past 3 months; for those who had done so, ASTHCANGT3 indicates whether they had used more than 3 cans of prescription inhaler in the past 3 months. ASTHPREV indicates whether persons had ever taken preventive asthma medication (either in pill form or by inhaler) and, if so, ASTHPRENOW indicates whether they were now taking such medication.
Other asthma-related questions were periodically included in the survey; see ASTHMAEV for a summary of these variables currently in the IPUMS NHIS.
