Description

For sample adults and sample children who still have asthma (ASTHMASTIL) or who had an asthma episode/attack in the past 12 months (ASTHATAKYR), and who ever used a prescription inhaler (ASTHPINEV), ASTHINSHOW indicates whether a health professional had shown them (or, for young children, their parents) how to use an inhaler.

The 2003 survey contained several other questions dealing with various aspects of asthma patient education. These covered whether persons with asthma had taken classes in asthma management (ASTHCLASS), whether they had been given an asthma management plan by a doctor or other health professional (ASTHPLAN), and whether they had received professional advice on long-term management of their asthma (ASTHMANAGE), on how to monitor peak flow for daily therapy (ASTHPEAK), on recognizing early signs of an asthma episode (ASTHSIGNS), on responding to episodes of asthma (ASTHRESPOND), and on changing things at home, school, or work to improve their asthma (ASTHCHEN).
