Description
For sample adults and sample children who still have asthma or have had an asthma attack in the past 12 months, ASTHCANGT3 indicates whether they had used more than 3 canisters of this type of inhaler during the past 3 months. Information on the use of prescription inhalers for quick relief of asthma symptoms was collected only from sample adults and sample children who still had asthma (ASTHMASTIL) or had an asthma episode/attack in the past 12 months (ASTHATAKYR). See the Comparability tab for a discussion of changes in universe.
Other asthma-related questions were periodically included in the survey; see (ASTHMAEV) for a summary of these variables currently in the IPUMS NHIS.
Comparability
In 2003 and 2008, this question was asked of sample adults and sample children who had an asthma episode in the past 12 months OR who still have asthma and used a mouth inhaler for quick relief from asthma in the past 3 months (ASTHPINEV). Beginning in 2013, the universe was relaxed to include all sample adults and sample children who still have asthma or have had an asthma attack in the past 12 months. In 2018, the universe to focus on sample adults and sample children who have specifically used a prescription asthma inhaler/disk most often in the past three months.
The 1999 variable ASTHCANSNO (Number canisters prescription inhalers used, past 3 months) is similar to but not fully compatible with ASTHCANGT3. Along with reporting a specific number rather than a dichotomous response, ASTHCANSNO implicitly covers prescription asthma medication taken by inhaler to either relieve symptoms or to prevent asthma attacks. By contrast, ASTHCANGT3 reports a dichotomous response and deals only with inhaled prescription medicine that "gives quick relief from asthma symptoms."
