Description

For sample adults and sample children who had an asthma episode/attack in the past 12 months (ASTHATAKYR) and who stayed overnight in the hospital for asthma (ASTHOSPYR), ASTHMANAGE identifies those who had talked to a health professional about long-term management of their asthma after the last time they left the hospital. In the case of sample children, the question was worded as, "did a health professional talk with you about long-term management of [his/her] asthma?," so an affirmative response may indicate that an adult family member talked with a health professional on behalf of the child.

The 2003 survey contained several other questions dealing with various aspects of asthma patient education. These covered whether persons with asthma had taken classes in asthma management (ASTHCLASS), whether they had been given an asthma management plan by a doctor or other health professional (ASTHPLAN), and whether they had received professional advice on how to use an inhaler (ASTHINSHOW), on recognizing early signs of an asthma episode (ASTHSIGNS), on responding to episodes of asthma (ASTHRESPOND), on monitoring peak flow for daily therapy (ASTHPEAK), and on changing things at home, school, or work to improve their asthma (ASTHCHEN).
