Description

For sample adults and sample children who still have asthma (ASTHMASTIL) or who had an asthma episode/attack in the past 12 months (ASTHATAKYR), ASTHOSPYR identifies those who had to stay overnight in the hospital because of asthma in the past 12 months.

In 1999 only, those responding affirmatively to ASTHOSPYR were asked a follow-up question about how many times they stayed overnight in the hospital because of asthma (ASTHOSPYRNO).

In 2003 and 2008, those responding affirmatively to ASTHOSPYR were asked a follow-up question about whether a health professional talked to them about long-term management of their asthma, after leaving the hospital (ASTHMANAGE).

Other asthma-related questions were periodically included in the survey; see ASTHMAEV for a summary of these variables currently in the IPUMS NHIS.

Comparability

While the basic meaning of this variable is completely comparable over time, major questionnaire changes introduced in 2019 may affect comparability with earlier years. The NHIS questionnaire was substantially redesigned in 2019 to introduce a different data collection structure and new content. For more information on changes in terminology, universes, and data collection methods beginning in 2019, please see the user note.
