For sample persons under age 18 who took pain relievers in the past 2 weeks (MPAIN2W), MPAIN2WPROB reports the main health problem for which the person took or used the medication. MPAIN2WPROB is part of the "Medicine Use" section of the 1981 Child Health Supplement.

For those who respond "yes" to MPAIN2W, the following information is also collected:
- Whether the respondent obtained the pain medicine via prescription (MPAIN2WRX),
- Whether a doctor recommended the use of pain medicine (MPAIN2WDREC), and
- How often the respondent used the pain medicine in the past 3 months (MPAIN2WFREQ)
